SOLID BLONDE
Melanie Walker and Nicole de Gruchy
Melanie and Nicole first met in 1993 working together as sports and continuity presenters respectively on NNTV (now SABC3). They struck up a firm and lasting friendship, which endures till today. This has led to many interesting (stange??) situations over the years, as both are blonde, sometimes inebriated, full-on rock chicks.
While Melanie is taking it easier these days as mother to three-year-old identical twin girls (with her first-born – ie. the husband – taking up a fair amount of time too!), Nicole has been performing as a singer/musician in and around South Africa, with her newly formed band, Nixx.
Melanie and Nicole intend to bring the 'lighter' side of blonde – umm, rock music – to the listeners of 1485 – Radio Today – with a range of rock from the 70's and 80's specifically, but not leaving out later genres. A fairly strong emphasis on South African rock will be included. They believe that rock music is very overlooked, and are glad to be part of the movement to rectify this situation!!!
Solid Blonde will be sometimes irreverent, sometimes fun, but never irrelevant! We will be looking at the possibility of going out to some music venues live. We will also be getting local artists into the studio for interviews, and we'll play their new material too.
