Stimela - Out of the Ashes

Stimela Not exactly a new release this but Stimela's thirteenth album since their formation in 1982 is definitely worth a listen. Seeing as their last twelve albums all achieved Gold or Platinum status, this is clearly one SA band who have battled their way through the dark days to take their rightful place in the forefront of the SA music invasion. Released under the Tequila banner, produced by Thapelo Khomo and engineered by the Digital Cupboard duo of Ian Osrin and Neil Snyman, 'Out of the Ashes' is possibly Stimela's strongest album to date.

The title is a metaphor not only for the band but for the country as a whole and the conceptual folding cover emphasises this with the band standing around with their hands in their pockets with flames licking around their feet.Open the gatefold sleeve and the guys look a lot happier with their intention to party clearly evident. The songs reflect this from the anthemic opening song and single "Madala Gugile" with its anti-drug and 'eyes on the future' message."Itheko(party)" and "Ukelele" are typical Stimela guitar and choral grooves."Ulala" slows the pace down with an introspective ballad and "Lookey Lookey", "The Beast" and "Cothoza" finish off the album with a strong and uplifting beat and message.

The title track however is the highlight of this album, a powerfully sung ballad with a lush instumental backing and the beautiful chorus full of emotion and yearning. The lyrics utilise images from nature to herald the rebirth theme so prevalent throughout the album. "Scatter the ashes and grow, Spring flowers blooming, Winter is gone,Tomorrow is now."
