SAN (featuring Zim Ngqawana) - San Song There's a major buzz going around on this excellent jazz album. The name SAN is not a reference to one of South Africa's earliest indigenous tribes but rather an acronym denoting the South African/Norwegian alliance responsible for this hybrid of influences. Zim Ngqawana is a member of the new school of SA jazz players, bringing a rich pedigree of experience, knowledge of SA music and instrumental virtuosity to the partnership. Bjorn Ole Solberg leads the three-man Norwegian contingent and has worked with Zim since their meeting in 1994. These two sax-meisters contribute the six original compositions featured on 'San Song'. The album kicks off with Zim's two pieces, the title track and 'Amagoduka', a 17-minute, three-part tribute to Africa's migrant workers. Solberg's four songs complete the album, with '43.Casablanca' and 'Cape Point' offering an interesting European angle to the mostly SA jazz feel of the opening tracks. Zim's sidekick Andile Yenana handles the piano chores while the Norwegian rhythm section provides a solid base to the duelling saxophones of the two frontmen. (SS) Stephen "Sugar" Segerman
