Flying Circus - Favourite Jinx Someone very important believes very strongly in this, the debut release from Flying Circus. The CD is being released simultaneously in South Africa and the UK and there is a strong marketing push behind it. So is it any good? The answer is an unqualified definitely! There's no kwela, jazz or funk here, just four young rockers absorbing all their Led Zep, REM and Van the Man influences and turning out a solid and sensitive album. On the opening track they lay their cards on the table: " Bob's on the radio and I'm talking to the ghost of Stevie Ray." The songs have strong, socially relevant but personal lyrics and melodies that demand repeated plays. Peter Last's vocals and Jo Martin's guitar soar through the songs like two mating eagles. The story is that these boys have a mountain of original material and had to slim them down to the 12 songs that appear on 'Favourite Jinx'. Seems they've chosen well -- there's an ebb and flow to this album that picks you up and then gives you a chance to sit quietly and catch your breath. Their songs have an intensity that carries right through till the end of the album. One could make comparisons to the Pearl Jam/Counting Crows school of yearning, stop-start rock but in this case it's not a bad thing. I particularly liked the songs 'Favourite Jinx' and 'On Tuesdays'. The final track, 'Me And Elvis', is more a statement of intent then a wishful think. These boys are ready for the fame that they and their backers clearly believe is possible. I'm hardly going to argue. This ain't no Monty Python sketch! (SS) |
