Green Day - Nimrod
This, the fifth album by this punk-pop trio was release in 1997 but has proved to be steady grower due to their huge following among the large punk fan-base in America and the recent success of the frenetic single 'Hitching A Ride'. Their 1994 debut album 'Dookie' sold a staggering six million copies and provided the basis for the four albums that followed. Straightforward, no-frills punk with the three eccentric members, Billie Joe, Mike Dirnt and Tre' Cool never losing the energetic mayhem and solid power of their performances.
'Nimrod', which is a derogatory term used often by Bugs Bunny and his arch-rival Elmer Fudd, is regarded as Green Day's best album to date. The trio have clearly chosen to extend their range and in come acoustic guitars, strings and melodic harmonies. The songs are smart and tuneful and definitely not long as evidenced by the fact that, in the speedy style of their spiritual fathers the Ramones, they have crammed 18 songs into 49 minutes. A feast of contemporary punk with an eye on the pop market, 'Nimrod' is a late Nineties blue(green?)print for Scabby Annie and the other SA punk bands.
